Something to see. Something to hear. Something to curse at.
Meridian JC tops project work
By Amelia Tan & Jane Ng
AROUND 95 per cent of Meridian Junior College (MJC) students scored As in Project Work, making their school the top performer in the A-level subject this year.
The school beat top JCs Hwa Chong Institution, which had 85 per cent distinctions, and Raffles Institution (Junior College) which had 92 per cent distinctions.
MJC's latest results cap its strong performance in Project Work in recent years, despite not being a top-ranked JC. Last year, 73 per cent of its students scored As and about half received the grade in 2007.
The school's deputy head of project work David Kwek attributes his school's success to the way the subject is taught.
'We inspire creativity in the students by exposing them to exciting trends and interesting things that companies are doing,' he said.
MJC student Andrea Ang, 18, who worked on a project on mega structures as a symbols of countries' progress, said being exposed to new, creative trends motivated her group-mates and her to look at topics from new angles. Her group scored an A for the project.
She added: 'Instead of focusing on the size and how mega structures like skyscrappers were built, my group-mates and I thought about how they could be seen as reflections of a country's progress. I think looking at things in a fresh way gave our project an extra edge.'
Project Work, which makes up 10 per cent of the universities' admission criteria, has been dogged by controversy since it was introduced as an A-level subject six years ago because it is marked internally. It is also moderated in-house by junior college teachers before being sent for external moderation.
While the in-depth research project was introduced to develop students' research, problem-solving, communication and teamwork abilities, some teachers and students question the accuracy of test results.
Last year, Temasek Junior College's results raised eyebrows as 87 per cent of its students scored As for the subject, a giant leap from 7 per cent the previous year. This year, about 50 per cent of its students scored an A.

Shall we go and petition to get PW scrapped? Maybe not. Let us just be glad that the ordeal is over for us. Haha.
Do remember to copy the GP notes from J1 and beginning of this year into the GP notebook by Friday. Enjoy the Easter weekends!
